- Empty it out. Remove everything inside — buyers don't want to feel like they're getting a used bag, and forgotten personal items can cost you.
- Clean it carefully. Wipe dust from the outside — but use only products meant for leather or suede, or you can ruin it — and clean the interior of any makeup or crumbs.
- Prove authenticity. Bring the card or certificate of authenticity it came with, or the original receipt. Without documentation, appraisal takes longer.
How to Spot a Real Louis Vuitton
Developing the eye takes years, but a few checks help:
- The patina. New LV straps and trim use vachetta leather — soft, detailed, and off-white — that darkens naturally over time.
- Craftsmanship. Real LV stitching is flawless and identical across the bag; loose or uneven stitches are a red flag.
- Date codes (older bags). Bags made from the early 1980s until 2021 carry a date code stamped on a leather tab (often on an inner-pocket seam) showing where and when the bag was made — it should match the "Made in" country. Note: Louis Vuitton replaced date codes with embedded microchips in 2021, so newer authentic bags won't have one.
